TL;DR

There is no verified ranking recipe for "AI search" as a single channel. OpenAI, Perplexity, Google Search, and Gemini expose different access controls and different evidence. OpenAI documents OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT referral parameters. Perplexity documents PerplexityBot and published IP ranges. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode use its core Search systems, require ordinary Search eligibility, and need no special schema or AI file. Gemini may show sources, but Google does not publish a general publisher-ranking formula for Gemini Apps. The practical method is to clear each documented access gate, publish original and useful pages, build legitimate third-party corroboration, and measure every surface separately. Why an evidence ledger is better than an engine-hack list

Engine-specific GEO advice often turns a small prompt sample into a permanent platform rule. A brand sees Perplexity cite Reddit in one audit and concludes that Perplexity always rewards Reddit. Another audit finds ChatGPT citations that overlap with Bing and turns that correlation into a claim that Bing indexing is mandatory.

Those observations can produce useful experiments, but they are not official ranking documentation. A reliable plan labels every recommendation as one of four things:

  1. A documented access control.
  2. A documented product behavior.
  3. A dated observation from a defined prompt sample.
  4. A general content or authority practice whose platform effect is still a hypothesis.

The unknowns are not a reason to do nothing. They are a reason to stop presenting hypotheses as facts.

ChatGPT Search: clear the documented access gates

OpenAI says any public website can appear in ChatGPT Search, but placement is not guaranteed. To make a page eligible for normal summaries and snippets, allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt and permit OpenAI's published searchbot IP ranges through the host, CDN, or firewall.

OpenAI's Search documentation also says ChatGPT may rewrite a user's question into targeted queries and sometimes works with third-party search providers. It does not say that all current Search results run through Bing. The 2025 Bing-correlation study remains a dated third-party observation, not an official architecture statement.

Measure ChatGPT separately. Save the answer and cited URLs for a fixed prompt set, then track links carrying utm_source=chatgpt.com in analytics. For the complete technical checklist, use the ChatGPT GEO playbook.

Perplexity: allow its search crawler, then test the real prompts

Perplexity's crawler documentation says PerplexityBot gathers and indexes web information to surface and link websites in Perplexity search results. Perplexity recommends allowing the crawler in robots.txt and permitting its published IP ranges.

Perplexity-User is different. It supports user-triggered visits and is not the automatic crawler used to build search eligibility. Perplexity says this user-triggered fetcher generally ignores robots.txt because a user requested the page.

Perplexity does not publish a rule saying that freshness, Reddit, LinkedIn, YouTube, or source count determines rankings. In Beamcite's June 2026 prompt audit, Perplexity cited several social and community sources. That is a dated observation from a small sample, not a platform rule.

The defensible actions are simple:

  • Allow PerplexityBot and verify that bot protection is not blocking it.
  • Publish the strongest owned page for the buyer question.
  • Build legitimate third-party corroboration where buyers already participate.
  • Rerun the same prompts and save every cited URL.

Google AI Overviews and AI Mode: normal SEO is the foundation

Google's current generative Search guide says AI Overviews and AI Mode are rooted in its core Search ranking and quality systems. A supporting page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Google Search with a snippet.

Google recommends the fundamentals: crawlability, helpful and reliable people-first content, important information in textual form, descriptive internal links, and useful images or video where appropriate. It also says there is no special schema, AI file, or AI-specific rewrite required for inclusion.

This matters for Beamcite's five zero-impression posts. Adding contextual internal links and useful cover images follows Google's documented guidance. Neither change guarantees indexing or impressions. URL Inspection remains the definitive way to check Google's status for each exact page.

Measurement also changed in 2026. Google announced dedicated Generative AI performance reports for a subset of sites in June 2026. The report can show impressions, pages, countries, devices, and dates for generative features, while the same data remains part of overall Search performance. If the dedicated report is not present for a property, that absence is a product-rollout limitation, not proof that the site never appeared in an AI feature.

Gemini: test carefully because the publisher rules are thin

Google says Gemini Apps may show sources and related links, but not every response includes them. Some Gemini experiences, including Deep Research, can use Google Search as a source. That does not establish that every Gemini answer uses one index or that ordinary Google ranking position determines Gemini citation.

Google does not publish a general rule saying Gemini is the hardest engine for a new brand, always favors large domains, or weights entity authority in a fixed way. In Beamcite's 38-prompt June 2026 sample, Gemini cited more established domains than ChatGPT did. Keep that as an observation and rerun it before using it to set a client's priority.

For Gemini:

  • Keep the brand identity and description consistent across owned and legitimate third-party pages.
  • Publish original evidence rather than many commodity variations of the same article.
  • Record whether a response shows a source, a related link, only a brand mention, or nothing.
  • Recheck the same prompts over time because the product and source behavior change.

The shared baseline across every surface

The platforms do not expose one ranking formula, but they all need material they can access and evaluate. Build the shared baseline once:

  1. One clear purpose per page. Natural keyword overlap is fine. Avoid several pages doing the same job.
  2. Original, non-commodity value. Add first-party data, a real decision framework, screenshots, examples, or expert experience.
  3. Primary-source support. Replace unsupported engine claims with official documentation or label them as observations.
  4. Contextual internal links. Connect related pages with descriptive anchors so crawlers and readers can discover the cluster.
  5. Legitimate off-site corroboration. Use relevant directories, expert contributions, customer proof, podcasts, communities, and founder posts. Do not manufacture mentions.
  6. Separate measurement. Keep Google impressions, AI citations, referrals, and conversions as distinct signals.

Third-party authority without spam

Reddit, LinkedIn, Medium, directories, review sites, podcasts, and industry publications can all help a brand become easier to verify. Their value depends on whether the placement is relevant, real, and useful.

Posting the same promotional paragraph everywhere is not authority. A better program creates independent evidence:

  • A founder explains an original method on LinkedIn and links only when useful.
  • A customer or partner describes a real outcome in its own words.
  • A directory profile keeps the brand category and description consistent.
  • A guest contribution adds expertise to a site buyers already trust.
  • A Reddit answer solves the thread's problem without pretending to be an independent customer.

The goal is corroboration, not link count. Google explicitly warns against inauthentic mentions, and no AI platform documents mass listing submissions as a ranking shortcut.

Which engine should you prioritize first?

Choose the first experiment from evidence, not a universal hierarchy:

  • ChatGPT demand is already visible in customer calls or referrals: clear OAI-SearchBot access and run a fixed Search prompt set.
  • Perplexity appears in buyer research: verify PerplexityBot access and compare its cited domains with your owned and third-party footprint.
  • Google already shows relevant impressions: improve the indexed page, internal links, and original value, then inspect generative reports if the property has access.
  • Gemini matters to the audience: run a dated prompt baseline and record source behavior before declaring an authority gap.
  • No surface has evidence yet: start with the buyer questions and measure all four consistently for a month before splitting the content plan by engine.

This approach can reveal that one shared page is enough, that an existing page needs a refresh, or that a new page is justified. It avoids writing four versions of the same article based on undocumented ranking theories.

Frequently asked questions

Does ChatGPT Search require Bing indexing?

OpenAI does not document Bing indexing as a current prerequisite. It says ChatGPT Search sometimes uses third-party search providers and may rewrite queries. A historical study found Bing correlation in a sample, but that is not proof of an exclusive index or a guaranteed tactic.

How do I make a page eligible for Perplexity?

Allow PerplexityBot in robots.txt and permit its published IP ranges through your firewall or CDN. Then test the real buyer prompts and save the cited URLs. Eligibility does not guarantee selection.

Do Google AI Overviews need special schema or an llms.txt file?

No. Google says there is no special schema, AI file, or extra technical requirement for AI Overviews or AI Mode. The page must meet normal Search eligibility, and the usual SEO fundamentals remain relevant.

Can Search Console show AI Overview performance?

Google includes generative Search data in overall performance and began rolling out a dedicated Generative AI report to a subset of properties in June 2026. If available, that report breaks visibility down by pages, countries, devices, and dates.

Is Gemini always the hardest engine for a new brand?

Should I create a separate page for every engine?
